Marie Herrington is a contemporary voice specialist who composes and performs music that fixates on the capabilities of the human voice, and how far it can go beyond the norm. Grounded in vocal pedagogy, she aims to build and grow voices she works with through her knowledge of the limitations of the human voice and how we can expand upon that as musicians. International award winning composer, Marie has composed music for a multitude of choirs including but not exclusive to NYC’s C4: Choral Composer/Conductor Collective, The Handel Choir of Baltimore, and The Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus. Marie’s current main collaborators are Ben Zervigon and the members of New Orleans’ Alluvium Ensemble, which she’s been a member of since 2020; Ladies Out Loud which is a trio started by Marie, Leah Wenger, and Elisheva Pront; soprano Sofia Scattareggia; and Appollo Chamber Music where she plays piano.
Marie was most recently a featured clinician and guest composer working with the Gay Men’s Chorus, she was a featured musician for Argentina’s virtual contemporary concert series, La Hora Acusmatica, and she premiered Josh Bornfields’ new song cycle, Trial, which won the 2024 commission prize for SongSLAM NYC. In the past year, she has performed works by international composers at the MATA Festival of NYC in 2025, and her song cycle arrangement of Ukrainian traditional song Plyve Kacha was performed by Liz Pearse, Timothy Morrow, and the Mill City String Quartet for the final concert of Source Song Festival in 2025.
Marie’s recent accolades at Govans include forming the Artist in Residence Program which you can learn more about here, creating premiere opportunities for local musicians and composers through Music Sundays (see here for info about our last Music Sunday), hosting guest musicians for performances and special music during services such as Sofia Scattarreggia, Ramilya Saubanova, Nicolle Avila, Michael Manganiello, Gunner Chancey, Erin Lee, Greg Small, Joann Moorer, Robin McGinness, Simone Baron, Myroslav Mykhailenko, Patrick Flannery, Elisheva Pront, Jake Elfner, Ben Ross, Thomas Potts, Timothy Krippner, and many more musicians. Marie’s joint concert series with Timothy Krippner titled Women In Music features Marie and Timothy performing educational concerts of music by women composers of various eras, ethnicities, and genres. This concert series originated at Govans in 2023 with Lea’s Music Monday recital series and ended with a nationwide tour fall of 2024. Finally, to honor the work her chancel and handbell choirs have completed while challenging their performance practice, Marie wrote All That We Love, a cantata for choir, pop soloist, three classical soloists, handbell choir or glockenspiel, piano, organ, celeste, and string quartet. All That We Love is a cantata that honors all of those who have a dark time during the holidays: taking the principle concepts of inclusion into account as well as the concept of a “Blue Christmas” and why a Blue Christmas Service is a necessity for so many during the holidays. This piece was recorded December 14, 2025 by Alan Naylor and features guest performers Olivia Heaner, Julia McCabe, Donato Celentano, Jocelyn Taylor, Erin Lee, Marcus Gee, Nathan Hillman, Anthony Shields, Claire Li, Thea Kammerling, Jim Gibbons with the Govans Chancel Choir and Marie conducting.
