Govans Presbyterian Church will begin a new direction for its Food Ministry in the near future. Our campus will soon launch the Govans Presbyterian Church Community Fridge and pantry, which will be accessible 24/7 for community members to take what they need and/or donate what they can.
The Govans Presbyterian Church Fridge will be part of the Baltimore City Fridge Network, which supports 20+ refrigerators and pantries throughout Baltimore City. Entirely run by volunteers, this growing network of residents works together to gather ingredients and supplies, prepare meals, and distribute them to every corner of the city. Guidelines will be posted to help keep everyone safe and healthy. We hope you will join our community by either contributing homemade meals clearly labeled or by stopping by our fridge to take what you need. No questions asked.
We love the mission of our current food ministry, Soul Kitchen, but it cannot continue to operate in its current form. While we are excited about this new endeavor, we have heard the community’s concerns, and we take them seriously.
Govans’ Food Ministry will continue to reflect the heartbeat of Soul Kitchen’s essence going forward. We want to continue to create opportunities for the church and the community to come together to live fully our mission to be a Matthew 25 church. That Bible verse calls us to feed the hungry. It also compels us to address systemic issues that surround food insecurity, racism, and discrimination of all sorts. We will work through this with these values intact.
We could never adequately express our gratitude to every volunteer during its 15-year-long run, especially our most recent leader, Carolyn Anewich, who poured her heart into each meal.
This new endeavor perfectly aligns with God’s call to love our neighbor as ourselves. As Matthew 25:35-36 states, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty, and you gave me drink.” We are grateful to join this growing list of residents and organizations who are standing alongside our neighbors during these troubling times of uncertainty.
