Purpose Statement

Govans Presbyterian Church is an inclusive fellowship striving to love God, grow in Christ, and build relationships, through service to others.

In living out this purpose we believe the following values make us a distinctive Christian fellowship:

  • We embrace a variety of understandings about Jesus of Nazareth, the nature of God, and the Christian faith.
  • We celebrate the truth of the Bible and are not limited to a single method of biblical interpretation.
  • We honor all people and advocate for justice and equality for all.
  • We find profound expressions of God’s love outside the walls of our church and the confines of our community, and incorporate them in the life and worship of the church.

Govans Presbyterian Church was established in October 1844 as a Union Chapel. By 1846 it had become a full church and a member of the Presbytery of Baltimore. The Church is part of the PCUSA Denomination, and a member of the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic.

"Govans" (Govan, Govane) is the name of the community in which the church is located. The family that established old Govanstown in the late 1700's came from the Glasgow area of Scotland - where another congregation, with roots dating back to 575, bears the same family name: Govan Old Parish.

Govans Presbyterian is a member of a number of advocacy and educational groups.

Govans Presbyterian is A More Light Church, meaning we are welcoming of all persons into the life and leadership of our church regardless of their race, age or sexual orientation.
