Kay Papa Nou Orphanage
Children in hoola hoop
Govans Presbyterian Church supports Kay Papa Nou orphanage in Haiti.  In addition to sponsoring 25 children at the orphanage, the church pays their annual rent out of the mission budget.  Church member Joyce Kruse has visited Haiti a number of times, taking school supplies, toys, clothes, and money to help the children.

The history of our relationship with Kay Papa Nou

The story is truly a great one because it is one of compassion and giving.

It began in Haiti on a mission trip in March 2008. A group from Govans Presbyterian Church went on what was called a “reverse mission” experience. In other words, to experience another culture and people, “build relationships.” During this trip, we were introduced to David and Danny Guillaume, a Haitian couple, who had taken 25 orphaned children into their rented home in Port-au-Prince with no means of regular income, no clear means of support, no jobs, but an unwavering belief that God would provide if they followed his ministry and call.

We were introduced to David as he was about to be evicted from his rented home. We also felt that helping him would be a good cause for us to take on although at the time, we had no way to know if our church back in Baltimore would share our enthusiasm.

The first day back in Baltimore, our pastor, Tom Harris, made a plea to our congregation to help pay David’s rent and $4000 were collected to do so. Our church attendance is down and finances are tight, but regardless, purses opened.

Within 3 months, 31 people came forward to offer sponsorship support for the orphanage. In addition to the sponsorships, rent was collected a second time and the Haiti fund continued to grow. Several people outside our church heard about the children, saw their faces in photos, heard the story, and also contributed.

Well, into our second year, our relationship with our Haitian friends David and Danny Guillaume grows and our church continues to help these children. David and Danny’s belief that God will provide has materialized and our church has been given the opportunity to help the poorest of the poor, the abandoned and street children in Haiti.

Purses were opened when the call came and hearts were opened when stories were shared.

So… imagine what would happen if everyone took a trip to a country like Haiti. What a difference we could make in the world.

Thank God that we have been given the opportunity to give some of what we think we need but don’t to those who really need. It is a matter of choice.

From a child at the orphanage: “I learn to love more prayers for God. David and Danny teach me beautiful things and principles. I say Thank You to them for all the things they give me. Thank you for school. They teach me to read and write so I can go to school and learn to be a doctor. I don’t have hunger for food and they don’t send me away. I tell them – Thanks.”
